Biking and hiking tips

If you love exploring nature and enjoying the fresh air, then a camping holiday is just meant for you! At a campsite, you live close to nature. Because many campsites have specialised in cycling/cycling holidays or rambling/walking holiday – look for the topic symbols – you can be sure you’ll have the perfect opportunity to go biking and hiking in natural surroundings and enjoy nature at close quarters.

However, don’t be put off if the very thought of an active camping holiday subjecting your feet to pedals or walking boots makes you break sweat. The Danish countryside is fairly flat and because the campsites and tourist sights are not very far apart, it’s quite feasible for the oldest and the youngest members of the family to come along. Routes are clearly marked and sign-posted, so it’s easy to find the most scenic expanses of road where you can be confident you’ll be safe. It’s also inexpensive and easy. Because it’s all about taking some exercise, you won’t need a car or caravan to get going.

Feel free to contact the Danish tourist offices if you need any help in planning an active camping holiday. They will give you detailed route maps for the area you and your family will be travelling in.

If you’re on foot or cycling, you belong to the category of campers known in Denmark as “light campers”. The majority of approved campsites have set aside special areas for light campers. Because light campers don’t bring cars or lots of baggage and tend to sleep in small tents, you won’t have any trouble finding a place to lay your head. If a campsite is “all sold out” for people in cars, remember to ask the camp director whether that applies to you, too. Since you won’t be carrying much luggage, you’ll often find it doesn’t.
